Support & help

A little help,
when you need it.

Practical guidance for reading, listening and keeping your data safe. These instructions describe the Android pre-release app; iOS guidance will follow its release.

Getting started

Trial & purchases

When does the trial begin?

The 14-day full-access trial starts on the first successful app launch, not when you first play audio or sign in. No payment is taken automatically when it ends.

What can I use after the trial?

Reading, Surah/Juz/page navigation, bookmarks, basic favourites, page-layout settings and last-read restore remain free. Audio, playlists as playback tools, Hifz, recordings, downloads and Drive backup/restore require the one-off unlock. Normal app launch does not show a blocking paywall.

How do I unlock the full app?

After Android launch, choose a paid feature or open Mus’haf · Access & backup. The unlock screen explains the one-time purchase and displays the store price. The intended UK price is £5.99; local pricing may vary. There is no subscription.

Google Play purchases cannot be completed in a pre-launch build until the product and testing accounts have been configured.

How do I restore a purchase?

While online, open Mus’haf · Access & backup → Restore purchase. Use the Google Play account that originally purchased and installed the app. If you use several Google accounts, check the Play Store account and installation history; the app does not have its own Play-account selector.

A confirmed purchase works offline. On a new installation, restore online first. Pending payments must be confirmed by Play. Do not purchase again just because a restore is temporarily unavailable. Google Drive backups do not contain purchase entitlement.

For the planned iOS app, App Store purchase/restore instructions will be added after implementation and validation. Purchases across platforms are not automatically interchangeable.

Keeping your place

Backup & moving devices

Where does my backup go?

Into the private application-data area of your own personal Google Drive, using the Google account you authorise. It is not a central Mus’haf database and may not appear as a normal file in My Drive. Google sign-in is optional and is not required for reading or the trial.

What is included in a backup?

Reading data includes bookmarks, favourites/groups, Hifz progress, planner/history, notes where present, preferences, layout settings and last-read position. Downloaded recitation audio, reciter cache, trial state, purchase entitlement, diagnostics and review/test data are excluded.

Practice recordings are stored locally by default. The recordings-backup option is off by default; enabling automatic backup does not enable it.

Practice recordings are excluded from Drive backups by default. You can explicitly enable Back up practice recordings in Settings → Access, backup & privacy. This choice is separate from automatic backup. If enabled, saved practice recordings are included with the backup in your own Google Drive and may use significant space from your Google Drive allowance. The app shows an approximate size for recordings on your device. Leaving this option off keeps backups lightweight. Turning it off does not delete recordings already on your device or remove recordings from earlier Drive backups.

Backups are limited to 512 MB before compression. If a recording-inclusive backup is too large, you can turn recording backup off and back up normal app data. A failed backup does not delete your local recordings.

How do I back up or restore?

Use Settings → Access, backup & privacy → Back up now or Restore backup, then authorise the account holding your backup. Drive configuration must be completed before this works in a public release.

The app offers the latest matching backup. Before downloading it, you choose whether to restore normal app data only or also practice recordings, where the backup contains them. Recording restore is off by default. The app shows the archive download size when available; older backups may have an unknown size. A combined archive is downloaded in full even if you skip restoring recordings, so it may be large. You can cancel before downloading. A further confirmation is required before replacing local app data, with a warning if local data is newer. Skipping recording restore preserves your existing local recordings and recording settings. Choosing recording restore replaces local recordings with those in the backup; records are not silently merged. Authorisation, network or full-Drive failures do not remove local data or recordings.

Automatic backup is optional, runs while the Android app is open after changes, and is subject to a six-hour attempt interval. It is not continuous background sync and does not enable recording backup.

Google Drive sign-in and backup are optional. Normal app use does not depend on Drive. Network failure, full Drive storage, authentication failure or Drive errors do not remove local app data or recordings. You can continue using local data and recordings without Drive, including after a failed backup.

How do I move to a new phone?

Make and confirm a successful backup on the old device. Install the public app on the new device, restore the purchase using the purchasing store account, then restore Drive data with the Google account holding the backup. Download reciter audio separately.

Do not assume the private/test package transfers data automatically to the public app, or that Android backups/purchases can already transfer to the planned iOS app. Keep the old installation until your data is safely confirmed.

Listening, online and offline

Downloads & audio

How do I download recitation?

Open Downloads, choose a reciter and download a Surah, Juz or all available Surahs. Wi-Fi is recommended for large catalogues. Only completed, verified files are available offline. The essential Mushaf itself works offline after installation.

The updated Android downloader uses a persistent background queue and one progress notification. Screen-off and background downloads are supported by its architecture; Android may still pause work for network or system-health reasons. Respect any mobile-data costs.

What if a download is interrupted?

Reconnect and allow the queued job to retry. Pause keeps completed and partial files. Selecting Download again completes what is missing; it does not redownload verified files unnecessarily. A source that cannot resume may require restarting that single file.

Downloaded counts refer to verified offline Surahs. The separate current-file line shows bytes being transferred. If you deliberately Force stop the app or stop its job from Android’s Task Manager, reopen it and explicitly continue.

How do I free audio storage?

Use Downloads to remove an individual Surah, one reciter’s downloads or all downloaded recitation. Pause a conflicting active download first. Verified and temporary storage are listed separately; partial files do not count as offline Surahs.

Removing downloaded recitation does not remove bookmarks, favourites, Hifz progress, settings or your practice recordings. Audio playback/download tools still require full access after the trial.

Why has playback stopped, or why does audio sound unusual?

Check media volume, network access, the selected reciter and the connected audio device. Try a verified offline download to separate a network issue from playback. A manual pause or headphone disconnect can intentionally leave audio paused after an interruption.

Natural source reverb or repeated recitation is not automatically an app fault. For a problem, note the reciter, exact Surah:ayah, playback/repeat mode and whether it also occurs offline. Avoid clearing app storage as a first step; that can remove your personal data.

Your own practice

Practice recordings

When is the microphone used?

Only for a practice recording you choose to make. Grant microphone access when requested for recording; it is not needed to read the Mushaf. Listen back or manage recordings using the app’s recording controls.

Can I back up my recordings?

Google Drive sign-in and backup are optional. Normal app use does not depend on Drive. Network failure, full Drive storage, authentication failure or Drive errors do not remove local app data or recordings. You can continue using local data and recordings without Drive, including after a failed backup.

Audio you record yourself is separate from downloaded reciter MP3s. Clearing reciter downloads does not delete practice recordings. Uninstalling or clearing app storage can remove local recordings, so confirm your chosen backup before doing either.
